Pay. Them.

I don’t know if it’s the petty in me, but seeing employers freak out because their employees are refusing to show up for slave wag..(ahem, sorry, I mean work) has me feeling all warm and fuzzy inside. 😊

I know y’all have seen pics of sheets of Office Depot printer paper taped (barely hanging on) on doors and drive-through speakers, with poorly thought out font sizes and employers begging for new workers, while simultaneously showing why anyone considering a job there should run the other way.

They go a lil something like:

“We are closed because our employees are refusing to do the job they agreed to. If you are hardworking and dedicated, we’re hiring!”

Throw in “lazy, unreliable, and dishonest” plus a mention of the current pay they’re offering (aka crumbs) and I think that pretty much covers every one I’ve seen.

Y’all, I just don’t understand how they could wake up and think: “I really need to hire more people, but what’s my strategy?” and a few moments later (in my Spongebob voice) proclaim, “I got it!” and go with…that.

There was no genuine guilt for their employees’ poor working conditions, enhanced exposure to Covid and low wages. Just people who don’t have to worry about making ends meet, pointing the finger at people who refuse to work at a job that won’t make ends meet.

The audacity of it all.

More audacious even, is the folks sitting at home guffawing at those choosing to collect unemployment instead of putting up with this nonsense. You want people to spend 8 hours dealing with the Karen’s and Chad’s of the world while working in sub-par conditions for a fraction of what they could make at home? Are you serious? You can’t be. Say sike, right now.

I know that there’s somebody out there who just got finished typing “but fast-food jobs are only for teenagers,” and I’d like to do what no one has clearly done (but should have)in your life –correct you.

Let’s go over that pesky little thing that ruins your “it’s just my opinion”– the stats.

  1. The average age of a fast-food worker is 27. If you break it down further by race and gender, you’ll see that specific populations like Black men, Indigenous men, and Asian men and women, have a higher average age– closer to 30+.
  2. Though 27 is average, about 20% of the workforce is aged 40 and above and around 15% is in their 30’s.

Can we put that tired line about teenagers to bed now? Thanks.

But don’t fret, employers! I got chu. I have alllll the answers. You got a pen ready?

What a daring, abstract concept, huh? Imagine actually paying people enough to cover their basic needs, offering benefits and PTO and allowing them bathroom breaks..just IMAGINE. Then go and make that shit happen instead of crying about having to treat people decently. Crying that the capitalism that has worked in your favor until now will force the industry to raise wages.

I mean, I thought y’all loved capitalism? Y’all were BFFs; what happened? Are you saying that you DON’T like capitalism, when you have to come up out your pockets? Sorry for your luck.

I thought I’d close this out with a door sign made by Chipotle employees:

“Attention Chipotle Customers:

Want to know why we are closed?

Ask our corporate offices why their employees are forced to work in borderline sweatshop conditions for 8+ hours WITHOUT BREAKS. We are overworked, understaffed, underpaid, and underappreciated. Almost the entire management and crew have walked out until further notice.

People should be > Profits
